History of Arlington

The foundation of Arlington was laid in 1876 along the Texas and Pacific Railway. The city got its name after General Robert E. Lee's Arlington House which is based in Arlington County, Virginia. The city was incorporated in 1884, and became a cotton-ginning and farming center with the passage of time. By 1910, Arlington witnessed the set up of public school system and development of water, telephone, natural gas, and electricity services. Year 1954 was a significant year in the history of Arlington. This year witnessed the set-up of General Motors assembly plant and in turn, large-scale industrialization commenced. The period between 1950 and 1990 saw the automotive and aerospace development in the city.
